About BeCAT's educational theme

In today's world where global warming and large-scale natural disasters occur frequently, consideration of the global environment is becoming essential in cities and architecture in order to realize a sustainable world. BeCAT provides education that questions the ideal form of new cities and architecture from the perspective of the environment. Through surveys, research, and design, we will conceive and implement prototypes of environmentally friendly architecture in the Asia-Oceania region and disseminate them to the world.

Kyushu Environmental Master Plan and Prototype Design

Kyushu, which is geographically and climatically close to other Asian countries, is considered a model for Asia, and several environmental themes will be extracted from the Kyushu region, and a master plan for the environment that will solve the problems will be created based on these themes. The themes are diverse, including "energy," "disasters," "materials," "tourism," and "ecosystems." For each of these themes, the studio will conduct research and design for one year and propose a prototype.

Social implementation and information dissemination in various forms

Based on the prototypes derived from studio education, we will implement them in various ways in society. For example, we will put the results of our education and research into practice in society, such as building an experimental house in Itoshima, making proposals to local governments and companies, and developing environmental apps, and we will actively disseminate information about them.

BeCAT PROGRAM 2022
About course registration

BeCAT offers two BeCAT PROGRAM programs for master's students in the Department of Spatial Systems and Urban Symbiosis Design at the Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies, Kyushu University, with the aim of cultivating talent who can combine engineering and design to advance projects in the field of urban architecture and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

BeCAT Basic Program

This program is open to graduate students at Kyushu University, and aims to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills to integrate engineering and design by taking a wide range of lectures and studio classes on urban architecture. Students will be certified by earning a total of 16 or more credits from the BeCAT program.

BeCAT Application Program

This course is open to students who have passed the eligibility screening and have been approved as a part of the basic program. The aim is to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills to integrate engineering and design, and to implement them in society at a high level. As a special research project, students can proceed with a social implementation project and submit a thesis that is approved by the judges to receive certification of completion.

Among the students who have been certified in the BeCAT Applied Program, particularly outstanding students will be awarded the BeCAT Award upon graduation from graduate school.
