BeCAT x Sugino-sha "Sake Brewery Garden" Tour Event Report

We held a tour of BeCAT x Sugino-ya Sake Brewery Garden.　

　BeCAT's project partner, Suginoya, is a long-established sake brewery in Motooka, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City, founded in 1870 (Meiji 3), and has been passed down through 150 years in the Motooka area. Due to the aging of the building, they consulted BeCAT, the architecture research and education center with environmental themes at the Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies, Kyushu University, about its future.
This project originated from a project undertaken at BeCAT's summer school in August 2021, where students tackled the challenge of converting a historic sake brewery into a community facility. Based on student proposals, the renovation plan was finalized. The project involved renovating the building while reinforcing its structure, transforming it into a sake brewery open to the community. 3D laser scanning technology was used for surveying, and data on the building's distortions was collected and analyzed. Furthermore, as much of the old brewery's tools and materials as possible, including dismantled materials and old timbers from the Meiji era, were used in the design, allowing visitors to feel the passage of time and the history that has flowed through this building, even in the new structure.
We held a tour of Sugino-ya's newly renovated "Sake Brewery Garten."

Tetsuya Fukuda, the designer in charge of the project, explained that by removing the ceiling on the second floor, the entire building was made lighter structurally, and a three-dimensional wooden lattice was incorporated, which also had a structural effect while achieving a large volume of air. The design, originally proposed by a student, incorporates a bamboo blind, and by adding steel braces to the exterior walls, the building is structurally supported while also creating a veranda space.

We hope to continue collaborating in various ways, such as using this as a satellite campus to showcase students' achievements, so please keep an eye out for updates.
